Julia Steers is a multi-Emmy and George Polk award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Nairobi, Kenya. Formerly the Nairobi bureau chief and correspondent for VICE News, she has been based in East Africa for a decade. Previously, Julia’s freelance work was featured in a range of outlets, including: Vice News Tonight, The Wall Street Journal, France24, CNN International, TIME Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Quartz, Vice News, Al Jazeera, The Independent UK, The Times, and Foreign Policy magazine. 

Earlier in her career, she worked as the director of social media and as a broadcast producer at CBS News. Prior to joining CBS News, Julia spent several years at The Huffington Post. She speaks fluent French and conversational Arabic. 

Julia has led news documentary teams into Sudan’s remote Darfur region and to the Central African Republic, where they were the first — and to date, only — team of Western journalists to embed with Russia’s Wagner group. Her work focuses on politics, human rights, and the impact of conflict. She has covered revolution in Sudan, war in Ethiopia, drug trafficking in East Africa, and Russian influence in the Central African Republic.

She has also reported from Russia, Ukraine, Kenya, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Central African Republic, South Sudan and Sudan.
